Term 4 Week 7

Class four have taken full advantage of the nice weather this week and have enjoyed lots of outdoor learning.  We started the week by practicing our spelling words with chalk outside.

We then enjoyed some silent reading in the sunshine.

Some very important guests have arrived in class this week...our tiny baby caterpillars.

They have come in a small tub which includes the food they need to grow to larger caterpillars.  We plan to observe them closely in class to help us learn about the life cycle of a butterfly.

We looked at butterflies wings and noticed that their wings are symmetrical.  We used lego to design our own symmetrical wings for a butterfly.  We enjoyed doing this outside too!

I think you'll agree...some of our butterfly wings were very imaginative!!

We were lucky enough to have a live butterfly in our classroom for the day.  We made sure it had some sugary water and some petals so that it could survive for the day then we set it free later in the afternoon.  We enjoyed looking at its fragile wings and how delicate its legs and antennae looked.

Class four also set about making a minibeast hotel this week.  We researched some ideas from the internet and looked for information on how to make one in our school grounds.  We then worked together to draw some plans for our own minibeast hotel.  Once we had sketched some ideas we decided as a class how we would like our final design to look.

We were very lucky as some parents were kind enough to help us out by providing some wood, carpets, sticks, old plant pots, and various bits and pieces.

Once outside in the woodland area at the tennis court we started to construct our minibeast hotel.  We layered up pieces of wood and carpet to begin a structure.

Then we added bits of old grass, leaves, soil, old plant pots, tubes and other bits and pieces to help attract minibeasts to the hotel.

We even made an entrance with some 'slippery security guards!'

We very quickly found that visitors were attracted to our hotel!!

We even managed to add a special area for lone bees who need somewhere to stay using an old box and some sticks with holes in them.

During our ICT lesson this week we designed our own minibeasts using a website.  Once we were happy with our minibeast design we added a super power!  Then we printed the information on a card which we have laminated to be able to play top trumps with.
