Chinese New Year Dragon Shapes!

As part of our maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shape.  We were set a challenge to make a 3D model of a Chinese dragon to celebrate Chinese New Year.

We worked in groups to draw nets of shapes we wanted to use.
Then we gathered ideas for the decoration of the dragon.
We then had to figure out how to connect all our shapes together.  We named the shapes on the dragon. We are trying to get these dragons complete so watch this space for completed dragons!

Flushed Away animations

Class four watched the DVD Flushed Away last week. We thought carefully about how the characters had been made in preparation for making our own animations. We then gathered all the equipment we would need to make our own flushed away slug!

One of the special features of the DVD was a step by step guide from one of the animators from the movie.  He showed us how to roll out the plastecine in certain shapes and how to use various tools to get different textures on the plastecine.
We were surprised that it wasn't actually as easy as it looked!!
He also showed us how to use cocktail sticks in a very clever way to construct part of the model slug.
I think you'll agree we did a pretty good job!!
We are now going to get in groups and plan our own animations around our space topic.  Watch this space...for some slug aliens!!

Beginning our Space and Animations topic

Class four begun their Space and Animations topic by researching the different planets of the solar system.  We designed posters about each different planet which we have now displayed in our classroom with our inflatable planets!
We thought about the order of the planets and came up with a mnemonic to remember the order.
We then found out some information on the sun which we made into leaflets.

We have also been learning about stars and constellations. We looked at different constlations and the stories behind them.  We then used black paper and compasses to make holes for light to shine through. We plan to make a display of constellations on our classroom window.

Class Four's Viking Feast - Tuesday 27th January 2015

Class Four arrived at school at 6pm on Tuesday night ready to hold their Viking Feast.  They got themselves organised into their costumes and then paraded through to the hall with Aly (the Guizer) at the front!  They gave their biggest Viking roar when they arrived in the hall!!
Once everyone was seated class four helped to give out the soup and to make sure everyone had bannocks, oatcakes and cheese at their tables.

We had lots of people who wanted seconds and even thirds...so we think they must have enjoyed our feast!!  Then it was time to share our learning with our grown ups.

Our families really enjoyed seeing the hall which we had decorated and we were able to share our learning from the term.

Then it was time to perform....class four took to the stage in their finest Viking suits to perform The Up - Helly - AA song and The Galley song.

The words were really tricky so we did really well to learn and sing them.

After we had finished our performance we went outside to the tennis court where our fireman had our fire all set up.

We made sure everyone was a safe distance away then we cheered, hip hip hooray!!

Our Viking Galley was finally on fire!

We all really enjoyed watching our Galley go up in flames!  It was quite exciting because it was similar to the real Up - Helly - AA which was taking place in Shetland at the same time! After the fire had burnt down a bit we then got the chance to throw on our own torches which we had made!!

Class four would like to thank everyone who came along to celebrate our learning at the Viking Feast.  We would also like to thank everyone who helped to make the feast such a success.

Setting up for our Viking Feast

We started off by making home made oatcakes.
Then we had to butter the bere/flour bannocks and oatcakes.
We got some help to cut the cheese and made sure everything was set out equally on each tray.
Then we took all our bits and pieces through to the hall and started to set up.
Tables and chairs had to be set out.
Table centres and decorations also had to be organized.  We have worked really hard to make sure everything is ready, we are very excited to share our learning with our grown ups tonight.

Viking torches

Class four have been busy making Viking torches ready for our Up -Helly - AA festival.

Viking visitor

On Wednesday class four had a visit from All who came along dressed in his full Up-Helly-AA outfit. He told us all about his costume and the different traditions that take place at the festival.

Anybody that wanted to was allowed to try on parts of his costume! We were surprised at how heavy the items were.
GGGGGRRRRR!!!!
