Term 4 Week 9

Mr Forsyth took in some moths to show us that he had caught in his moth trap.  We carefully took them out of the moth trap and put them into tubs so we could observe them closer.

We used tiny paintbrushes to help encourage the moths to go into our tubs so that we didn't hurt their wings.

Once we had them in the tubs we observed them to see the patterns and body parts.   Then we carefully drew detailed drawings of them before setting them free.

We took advantage of the lovely weather by doing some minibeast art outside using natural materials.

We collected lots of different natural materials then used them to make some pictures of minibeasts.

I think you will agree we did a super job!

While we were out we found a black and yellow cocoon.  We weren't sure what it was, so when we got back to class we did some research.  We found out that it was the cocoon of a magpie moth.

This week we also used our knowledge about spiders to make our own spider webs and 3D spiders.

Some of us chose to use PVA glue to construct our webs...

where others choose to use string and lolly sticks.

Whilst researching honeybees we looked at honeybee hives and honeycombs.  We decided to make our own honeycomb using egg cartons and yellow paint.

Our honeycomb is in its final stages of completion and we look forward to adding a queen bee, some worker bees and some drones to it next week.
