Week 2 in Hoy Class

Week Beginning 24.8.15

Hoy class have been learning about the human skeleton this week.   We started by learning about various bones in the body and found out what their jobs are.  Then we used junk and various materials to create a life like skeleton.  We had to work in groups and make sure we included the bones we had been learning about.

On Wednesday we took part in a Tag Rugby session with Tom.  He went over skills we had learnt last year and then we played some tag games. 

We have also been learning our spelling words in different ways this week.  We have a spelling contract which we can pick an activity from.  One of the activities is to spell our words using shaving foam...

Very messy!!

It was a lovely day on Thursday so we practiced our words using chalk outside.

Hoy class - getting to know you activities

We have spent the first week of term getting to know each other.  We thought about things we wanted our classroom to be and came up with a class contract which we have all signed. 

We would like our  classroom to be safe,  happy,  fun,  respectful,  exciting and a good learning community.

We also started our human body  topic by looking at our faces.  We cut our pictures in half and tried to draw the other half.  It wasn't as easy as we thought it might be! 

Some of us challenged ourselves to complete a puzzle ball of the world!  It took a few days but it is now complete! ! 

K'Nex Spider Trap Challenge

Class four were set a K'Nex challenge to help move Charlotte and her egg sac from the fair to the barn.  They had to think carefully about how they would trap her safely and transport her from one place to the other.

They also had to create something which looked like Charlotte and her babies. 

Some decided to make a web for Charlotte to rest on.

They had to think about how they would tempt Charlotte into the trap and how they would keep her safe when it was moving. 

Ugly Bug Ball

Class Four celebrated the end of their Minibeasts topic by holding an Ugly Bug Ball.  They designed various different activities during the week before the ball.  They made a spider tangle...which wasn't as easy to get through as we might have expected...especially with costumes on!!

They adapted their favourite game of draughts to be bees and butterflies!

Class Four enjoyed playing their handmade minibeast board games.

And eating some 'tasty' snacks...including bug antenna, caterpillar grapes, ugly bug potion, slimy worm jelly and beetle dung rice krispie cakes!

One group created a game where minibeasts were hidden in the reading corner for others to find. 

We all had a great afternoon dressed up as ugly bugs!! We even enjoyed some dancing and a game of corners with special ugly bug music!!

Trip to Happy Valley

Class four enjoyed a trip to Happy Valley to have a picnic, explore and hunt for minibeasts.  When we arrived we found a nice spot to have our lunch. 

Some of us chose to go 'off road' a little!!

We then decided to build a shelter using sticks and other natural materials. 

It wasn't as easy as we thought as some parts collapsed around us! 

Some of us decided to make it a bit more of a challenge by doing a boys v girls competition! 

We had to hunt hight and low for twigs and materials.

We also found some minibeasts along the way...

We thought carefully about the structure of the shelters and placed the twigs so that they would balance on top of each other.

Some of us explored peedie puddles.

Whilst others were very excited to realise that a Robyn was watching closely!!

After a lot of hard work and team copoperation here are team one with their finished shelter!

It had a lot of lovely features...including carpet, and decorative shells.

Once we had finished exploring and building our shelters it was time to head back to school on the bus...but not before a group picture!
