Term 4 Week 11

This week Class four took time to visit our minibeast hotel for the last time.  We were happy to see that lots of minibeasts have made it their home.

While we were outside we also put up our minibeast codes so that other children in the school can see why it is important to look after minibeasts.

On Tuesday we held an Ugly Bug Ball to celebrate our learning from the minibeasts topic.  We had great fun making some stone minibeasts.

Making spider cupcakes!

Doing some minibeast arts and crafts.

And some tricky puzzles!

We also were very lucky as we had lots of party foods which some parents had kindly made for us to enjoy.

Some of us enjoyed dressing up as ugly bugs for the occassion!

We also played a game of 'Pin the Sting on the Bee'!

Term 4 Week 10

Class four have been busy making clay minibeasts this week.  We took the clay outside seeing as it was such a lovely day.  We started by using water to make the clay a bit softer then we begun molding it into the shape we wanted it.

We used various tools when working with the clay.  Some helped us to smooth it out, others allowed us to make patterns and shapes in the clay.

Once we had put the final touches on our clay models we left them overnight to dry out.  We plan to paint our clay minibeasts next.

We have also had some exciting visitors in class this week...our cocoons have hatched into beautiful butterflies.  We spent time observing the butterflies and learning about their movements and wings.

On Wednesday we went on a trip to Happy Valley.  We arrived shortly after 12pm and enjoyed a picnic lunch.

Once we had finished our lunch we were set a challenge.  We had to work in two teams to build a shelter which would protect us from the bad weather!!

We gathered sticks, pieces of moss, bits of broken plants and anything we thought might be useful to help build our shelter.

Once we had collected some materials we started to build the structure of our shelter.

We even added in some fancy features...a lovely fireplace and ornament!!

We finished our shelters by using the tarpaulins we had used for our picnic lunch!!

I think you will agree...we did a pretty good job of making our shelters!!

Afterwards we moved further up the forest to go on a minibeast hunt.  We looked under stones, in the mud and in the trees/plants to see what we could find.

We spent some time relaxing whilst doing some nature drawings.

We found lots of different creatures!

Once all the butterflies had hatched we took them outside to our minibeast hotel to set them free.

We carefully picked the butterflies out of the net and placed them on our minibeast hotel or on a flower.

They looked like they were enjoying settling into the hotel!
