Viking walk in Kirkwall and trip to the Cathedral

Today class four set off to Kirkwall to take part in a Viking walk and to visit the St Magnus Cathedral. We begun our tour at the pier where we found out about different buildings and why they were shaped and facing the way they were.

We moved along the street to Parliament Square which is where the Vikings used to hold meetings. When we reached the Big tree we found out about the history of the tree and why it is so important to the people of Orkney.  We also saw the last remaining part of the Kirkwall Castle which is now known as the TSB bank!
We stopped in the Tankerness Gardens for a play and our snack then found out about the Groattie house.
When we arrived at the St Magnus Cathedral we were all really excited to see inside.
Fran told us about the history of the Cathedral and why there were marks on some of the sandstone blocks.
We saw the memorial area for the HMS Royal Oak.
Then Fran told us the story of St Magnus. We found out about his battle with Haakon and how his bones had originally been buried in Birsay before being moved to the first kirk in Kirkwall.  Then they were moved to their final resting place inside a pillar in the St Magnus Cathedral.
Class four would like to say thank you very much to both Sandra and Fran for such an interesting and enjoyable trip.
