National Book Week

To celebrate National Book Week we each took in a copy of our favourite book. We then picked out a section of text in which we thought the author had written well.  We looked for a piece of language which painted an image in our heads. Then we illustrated the language paying careful attention to detail. We all did a really good job!

Runic writing

Class four have spent this week learning about Viking runes.  We found out where runes originated from and then we wrote our own names in runes.

Meausring in centimetres and metres

Class four have been working on measuring in centimeters and metres. We took part in a measuring challenge where we had to find both feet and hand measurements then compare the two.

Viking longhouses

Class four looked at the differences and similarities between a Viking longhouse and a modern day house.

They then were set a task in groups where they had to make one longhouse and one modern day house to show the differences.

Swimming success

Two boys from class four took part in a swimming gala at the weekend. We are very proud of their achievments. Both boys won a silver and a gold medal. Well done boys!

Historic Scotland Ranger Visit

On Monday class four had a very exciting afternoon. Sandra from Historic Scotland came to visit with a box full of Viking artefacts.  We were very excited to find out about the different items Viking people used.

Sandra passed around some pieces which we had to look at then try to guess what they were used for! It was a lot harder than we thought it would be...but we did have some good guesses!
We then drew pictures of the items and Sandra told us the stories behind each object.   Many of the items had been found in Orkney orginally so it was quite exciting.
We are allowed to keep the box of artefacts in class for a few weeks so we plan to make a Viking museum which other classes can come to visit.

Viking Shields

As part of our Viking topic we have been learning about the type of armour and weapons they used. We then set about researching designs for our own shields.

We though about the shapes we could use to make our designs eye catching and detailed.  We then used paint and markers to give them some color...on afraid you'll have to wait till our Viking Feast to see the finished products though!!

More spelling practice

We have been busy using hamma beads to help us practice our spelling words today. It was trickier than we expected it to be!

Spelling practice

Class four had great fun practicing their spelling words in a different way! We smoothed out shaving foam then printed letters on top to spell our spelling words for this week.

Visit from the School Nurses

Class four had a visit from the School Nurses last week.  We found out about head lice and hand washing.  We talked about why both were important for our health.

We used glitter to show how a cough can spread to each others bodies and equipment around the classroom.

We then put special UV gel on our hands.  We sung happy birthday twice whilst washing our hands. Then we put our hands under a special light to see how well we had washed our hands.
